July 2008 wine tour

Our July trip started with a mini-wine tour to Champagne and then Burgundy. Staying once more in La Loge , just outside of Epernay, a chambre d’hote attached to the Champagne house of Marcel Richard. Dinner with a bottle of house champagne was served and a breakfast of fresh bread, croissants and home made jams, for the princely sum of 100€ for two people plus dog in a double ensuite bedroom, although we did buy an extra bottle or two of the champagne. The following morning we set off for Beaune in the heart of the Burgundy vineyards. A trip to the Marché aux Vins was the highlight of the short stay. For 10€ you are given a tastevin, and a self-guided one hour tour. The fine wines are set out on a barrel, and you taste each one as you tour the cellars. Bottles of wine to purchase can be collected on the way. Wine is not cheap here, but of very good quality, and perfect for a special occasion.

We followed the tasting with an excellent dinner, and some more of the fantastic wines.
